The first time I took the RICA, and I have had to take it twice, I thought that I had done a good job in studying for it, but deep down inside I knew that I had really not done an adequate job in preparation.

And I was proven right…I hadn’t. When the results of the test came back, I was expecting a pass on the entire thing, but it wasn’t that way. I had almost totally failed the writing portion. I felt dumb and down in the dumps, but I had to pass the thing in order to get a job.

I was over 60 when I took this examination and was entering a third career, after being in the military and in ministry. I wanted to teach and so I became even more motivated to pass the thing. It is indeed passable.

During my second preparation time, I studied all of the relevant materials, put this study guide together to help me, read widely, and even took a RICA preparation seminar in order to assure that I would pass.

PREPARATION is the key word for both the multiple choice questions and the variety of writing responses that you will be required to give. For each domain you will need to know how to teach it and how to assess your results. Most likely, you should be able to write and address one to two ways to teach and one to two ways to assess. The more you know, the better you will be able to live to tell about your bout with the RICA!
